Argument over slots at tracks dominates second Democratic gambling summit

New jersey Democrats have held a conference to discuss the possibility of slots and video slots being installed at racetracks. The Meadowlands racetrack has been to focal point for this debate, as it is the largest horse racing complex in the state. This is a sensitive subject in New Jersey, as casino owners worry that having a large gambling destination in the state that is so far from Atlantic City that it will be taking business from them. The problem though, is that racetracks in New Jersey are facing increased competition from racetracks in neighboring states that already offer slots. If New Jersey racetracks are going to remain competitive they will probably have to take some business from the

casinos in the state. Many lawmakers see this as a necessary evil in order to keep as much gambling money in the state as possible. Hopefully it won’t be an issue. It is possible that the racetracks will only be seriously competing with similar venues in neighboring states. Since casinos are still different enough, and Atlantic City is a tourist destination in it’s own right, it’s possible that the business stolen from them will be negligible. It will all remain as speculation for the time being though, since the governor has shot down the proposal for now.
